What is a contract template?

A contract template is a standard preapproved form with fixed language and blanks for deal details, used to create contracts quickly when the same agreement recurs.

How templates work

Legal writes and approves the template once. When a new deal comes in, the drafter fills in the variables, such as party names, dates, price, scope and term, and picks from approved optional clauses. Templates suit agreements that repeat with small changes: non disclosure agreements, master service agreements, statements of work, order forms and vendor agreements.

Why they matter

  • Speed. Drafts start from a finished base, not a blank page or an old deal.
  • Consistency. Every contract of a type carries the same approved terms.

Who should own contract templates?

Can you change a contract template during negotiation?
