What is financial supply chain management?

Financial supply chain management treats the money flowing between trading partners as one process, covering procure to pay, working capital and order to cash.

What it covers

The financial supply chain is the set of payments and financial documents that move between buyers and suppliers as goods and services are bought, made and sold. It includes purchasing and paying, invoicing and collecting, credit terms, financing and cash forecasting. Financial supply chain management looks at those steps as one flow rather than as separate tasks owned by different teams.

Why it matters

Companies put a lot of effort into the physical supply chain and less into the financial one. A gap between the two shows up in working capital: invoices paid early or late, discounts missed, disputes that hold up cash and suppliers squeezed by long terms. The financial supply chain keeps the business running, paying staff and shipping products, so weak spots here can threaten the business itself.

  • Clear, enforced payment terms
  • Accurate invoices matched to orders and contracts
  • Visibility of what is owed and when
  • Options such as early payment discounts

How Aavenir handles it

Payment terms, discounts and rebates are set in contracts. Invoiceflow checks every invoice against those terms before payment, and Contractflow keeps the terms on record, so finance pays what was agreed.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Common questions

What is the difference between the physical and financial supply chain?

The physical supply chain moves goods. The financial supply chain moves the money and documents that pay for them, such as invoices, payments and credit. Read about procure to pay.

How does financial supply chain management improve working capital?

By making the timing of payments and collections predictable, enforcing agreed terms, catching invoice errors and using tools such as early payment discounts where they make sense. Read about accounts payable.

Where do contracts fit in the financial supply chain?

Contracts set payment terms, prices, discounts and penalties. Checking invoices against them is what keeps the money flowing on the terms the business negotiated. They are the reference point for every payment. See Invoiceflow.
