What is a category workbench?

A category workbench is one hub where category managers see spend, contracts, suppliers and plans together, to make better sourcing and spend decisions.

What it brings together

Category managers usually work across many systems: spend reports in one, contracts in another, supplier records and sourcing events in others. A category workbench gathers that information for one category in one place, giving the visibility, decision support and planning space that sourcing, purchasing, contract management and supplier management all draw on.

What a category manager uses it for

  • Seeing total spend in the category, by supplier and business unit.
  • Checking which contracts are active and when they expire.
  • Comparing supplier performance and risk.
  • Building and tracking the category strategy and savings plan.
  • Planning the next sourcing events.

Why it matters

Category decisions are only as good as the information behind them. When the facts are scattered, managers spend their time assembling reports instead of shaping strategy, and renewals or price increases slip past unnoticed.

How Aavenir handles it

Aavenir Atlas answers questions across the contract portfolio, such as which agreements in a category renew this year or which suppliers have price increase clauses. RFPflow runs the sourcing events that follow.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Common questions

Who uses a category workbench?

Category managers and strategic sourcing teams, along with procurement leaders who need a view of each category's spend, contracts and plans. Business stakeholders may use it to see what is coming up. Read about category management.

What data does a category workbench need?

Classified spend data, active contracts with key dates and terms, supplier records with performance and risk information, and the sourcing pipeline. Spend must be classified consistently for the view to make sense. Read about spend taxonomy.

How is a category workbench different from a spend analysis tool?

Spend analysis shows what was bought. A category workbench adds contracts, suppliers, plans and sourcing activity, so the category manager can act on what the spend shows. See Aavenir Atlas.
