The right contract measures show where value is gained and where it leaks. SM **Sonal Mehta**Jan 27, 2023 · 4 min read Contract management key performance indicators (KPIs) are the measures that show whether contracts are being created, executed and managed well. Tracked consistently, they help organizations reduce cost, improve supplier and customer relationships, spot problems before they become disputes and realize more of the value they negotiated. There is no universal target for any of them; the right level depends on your industry, contract types and strategy. This guide covers five measures to start with, what each tells you, how to read it carefully, and how AI driven analytics makes them easier to track. Key takeaways - Choose a small set of measures tied to your goals - Renewal rate needs context: some contracts should not renew - Compliance rate shows whether obligations are actually met - Time to signature reveals bottlenecks in drafting, review and approval - Track reasons, not only rates, so each measure leads to action ## Why measure contract management? Contracts carry a large share of an organization’s revenue, cost and risk, yet many teams cannot say how long contracts take, how many obligations are met or how many renewals happen by default. Measures make that visible. They show where the process slows down, which contracts deliver and where value leaks, and they give leadership a basis for investment decisions. A [contract scorecard](https://aavenir.com/glossary/contract-scorecard/) is a practical way to report them. ## 1. Contract renewal rate The share of contracts up for renewal that are renewed. A high rate usually signals healthy relationships, but read it with care. Renewing everything is not a success if some contracts should have been renegotiated, consolidated or ended. Track why contracts were or were not renewed, and separate active decisions from renewals that happened because a notice date passed unnoticed. See [contract renewal management](https://aavenir.com/use-cases/contract-renewal-management/). ## 2. Contract compliance rate The share of contractual obligations met on time and as agreed, on both sides. A high rate shows the organization knows and follows the terms it signed; it does not show whether those terms were favorable. In heavily regulated industries such as healthcare, financial services and government, the expectation for certain obligations is full compliance. Track reasons for non compliance to find process gaps. See [contract obligation tracking](https://aavenir.com/use-cases/contract-obligation-tracking/). ## 3. Time to signature and time to award How long a contract takes from request to signature, or for procurement, from sourcing start to award. Typical times vary widely by industry and complexity: complex technology or construction agreements may take months, routine services weeks. Long cycle times delay the goods, services or revenue the contract enables, and frustrate the business. Break the measure down by stage, such as drafting, internal review, negotiation and approval, to see where time goes. See [contract approval workflow](https://aavenir.com/contract-approval-workflow/). ## 4. Contracts signed against target The number or value of contracts signed against what was planned in a period. For sales teams it tracks revenue; for procurement, coverage of planned spend under contract. A shortfall points to bottlenecks, capacity limits or pipeline problems; a consistent overshoot may mean targets need revisiting. ## 5. Contract termination rate The share of contracts ended early, for cause or convenience. A rising rate can signal poor supplier selection, unclear terms or performance problems. Track who terminated, why and at what cost, and feed the findings back into sourcing and drafting. See [contract termination](https://aavenir.com/glossary/contract-termination-lifecycle-management/). ## Which other measures are worth adding? - **Obligations overdue**by owner and contract - **Contracts on non standard terms,**by clause and value - **Value leakage:**invoices above contract rates, service credits unclaimed - **Spend under contract**as a share of total spend - **Self service share:**contracts completed from templates without legal review **See contract measures built from your own data**Bring a set of contracts. We will show Aavenir AI extracting the data and the dashboards in Contractflow that track these measures. Schedule a demo ## How does AI make measurement easier? Measures are only as good as the data behind them. AI extraction reads every contract for dates, parties, values, clauses and obligations, and workflow data records how long each stage takes. In [Contractflow](https://aavenir.com/solutions/enterprise-contract-management-software/), dashboards draw on that data, and [Aavenir Atlas](https://aavenir.com/solutions/ai-contract-intelligence/) answers questions across the portfolio in plain language. A person reviews extracted data before it feeds reporting. ## How should you use the measures? Pick a few that match your goals, set a baseline, review them monthly with the teams involved and assign actions to owners. Compare against your own history before comparing with others. See [contract analytics with visual dashboards](https://aavenir.com/level-up-your-contract-analytics-with-visual-dashboards/). ## The bottom line Five measures give a solid start: renewal rate, compliance rate, time to signature, contracts signed against target and termination rate. Read each in context, track the reasons behind it, build it on reliable contract data and turn every result into an action with an owner. ### In this article - Why measure contract management? - 1. Contract management key performance indicators are measures of how well contracts are created, executed and managed, such as renewal rate, compliance rate, time to signature, contracts signed against target and termination rate. Learn about [key performance indicators](https://aavenir.com/glossary/key-performance-indicator-kpi/). ### ### What is a good contract renewal rate? There is no universal target. A high rate often signals healthy relationships, but renewing contracts that should have been renegotiated or ended is not success. Track the reasons for each renewal and separate active decisions from missed notice dates. See [contract renewal](https://aavenir.com/glossary/contract-renewal/). ### ### How do you measure time to signature? Measure the time from contract request to final signature, and break it down by stage: drafting, internal review, negotiation and approval. The breakdown shows where contracts wait and where to act first. See how [Contractflow](https://aavenir.com/solutions/enterprise-contract-management-software/) tracks each stage.
