# What is supply chain visibility?

Supply chain visibility (SCV) is the ability to track orders and shipments from source to destination, including the events and milestones along the way.

## What it covers

Visibility means a company can see where a part or product is as it moves through the supply chain toward the customer, and where specific orders stand as they move through the value chain. It includes logistics and transport, along with the status of events and milestones before and during transit.

## Why it is hard to achieve

The idea is simple, but the data sits with many parties: suppliers, carriers, warehouses and customs brokers, each with its own systems. Many companies have found gaps only when a disruption hit and they could not tell which orders were affected.

## Why it matters

- Early warning of delays, so plans can change before customers feel them.

- Lower safety stock, because the company trusts what is in transit.

- Faster response to disruption.

- Better information for customers on delivery dates.
