# What is supply chain optimization?

Supply chain optimization is running a supply chain at peak efficiency, delivering to customers at the lowest total cost while meeting service goals.

## What it means

An optimized supply chain is judged on measures such as total operating cost and the return earned on inventory. The goal is to deliver products at the lowest total cost with the highest profit, which means balancing the costs of manufacturing, inventory, transport and fulfillment against what customers expect.
