# What is supplier sourcing?

Supplier sourcing is identifying, evaluating and selecting suppliers that can meet a company's needs on cost, quality, delivery and performance, at the right time and place.

## What it involves

- **Supplier identification.**finding candidates through research, directories, networks and requests for information.

- **Supplier evaluation.**checking capability, capacity, finances, compliance and references.

- **Inspection.**samples, site visits or product and commodity inspection services where quality is critical.

- **Selection.**comparing offers and agreeing terms.

## What makes a good supplier

Price and affordability matter, but so do location, reliability and stability. A reliable supplier delivers what was specified, on time, and stays in business. Many teams now add risk, sustainability and diversity to the criteria.

## Why it matters

The right supplier gives you the most suitable products or services for the need, and a poor choice is expensive to undo once a contract is signed and the supplier is built into operations. Careful sourcing up front saves cost and disruption later.
