A spend taxonomy is the hierarchy of categories used to classify what an organization buys, from broad groups down to specific items and services. ## How a spend taxonomy works Each purchase is classified into a category that sits within a broader group, for example IT, then software, then security software. Some organizations adopt a standard scheme, while others build a custom taxonomy so procurement and sourcing teams see spend in the groupings they actually manage. ## Where it fits in spend analysis Spend analysis has three main phases: ## Why it matters Without a clear taxonomy, the same spend is scattered under different labels and the true size of each category is hidden. A good one lets teams see total spend by category, compare suppliers within it and set a strategy for each. ## How Aavenir handles it [Aavenir Atlas](https://aavenir.com/solutions/ai-contract-intelligence/) answers questions across the contract portfolio by category, supplier and term, which pairs with classified spend to show where spend is and is not covered by a contract. ## Keep reading [Spend analysis Spend analysis collects, cleans and classifies spend data to show what a company buys, from whom and at what cost. Standard schemes make benchmarking easier, while custom taxonomies match how your teams manage categories. Many organizations start from a standard scheme and adapt the lower levels to their own needs. [Read about category management](https://aavenir.com/glossary/category-management/). ### ### How many levels should a spend taxonomy have? Usually three or four. Enough detail to act on, such as a specific type of service, without so many levels that classification becomes inconsistent or slow. Procurement usually owns it, with input from finance so it lines up with the chart of accounts. It should be reviewed as the business and its buying change.
