# What is spend analysis?

Spend analysis is collecting, cleaning, classifying and analyzing spend data to see what an organization buys, from whom and on what terms, and to find ways to cut cost, risk and waste.

## The spend analysis process

- **Collect.**spend data from accounts payable, purchasing cards, enterprise resource planning and other systems.

- **Cleanse.**fix errors and group duplicate supplier names.

- **Classify.**map spend to a category taxonomy.

- **Analyze.**find patterns, concentration, off contract buying and price variance.

- **Act.**turn findings into sourcing and policy decisions.

## What it shows

A complete view reveals how many suppliers you use for the same thing, where spend is concentrated, which purchases bypass contracts and where prices vary for the same item. It can be done with dedicated software or with one off analyses, often called spend cubes, but it only helps if it is repeated and acted on.

## Benefits

Spend analysis gives procurement facts for negotiation, supports category strategies, exposes risk from dependence on a few suppliers and shows finance where money goes. It is usually the first step in any serious cost reduction program.
