# What is savings tracking?

Savings tracking is monitoring the savings that procurement plans and delivers through sourcing and cost reduction work, from the negotiated figure to what actually shows up in spend.

## How savings tracking works

Each initiative gets a savings type, such as price reduction, cost avoidance or a better payment term, and a method of calculation agreed with finance. The team records the expected saving when a deal is signed, then tracks realized savings as orders and invoices come through. Many teams separate recognized savings, which finance accepts against budget, from unrecognized ones, and spread savings over the contract term according to company policy.

### What is the difference between cost savings and cost avoidance?

Cost savings reduce spend compared with a baseline, such as last year's price. Cost avoidance prevents an increase that would otherwise have happened, such as holding a price when the supplier asked for more. Both count, but report them separately. ### Why do negotiated savings not show up in the budget?
