# What is risk analysis?

Risk analysis is identifying and assessing what could harm a business, project or decision, judging how likely and serious each risk is, so it can be reduced.

## How it works

- **Identify.**List what could go wrong, from supplier failure to regulatory change.

- **Assess.**Rate each risk by likelihood and impact, using data where possible.

- **Prioritize.**Focus on the risks that matter most.

- **Respond.**Avoid, reduce, transfer or accept each risk, with an owner.

- **Monitor.**Review as conditions change.

In finance, risk analysis also studies the uncertainty of cash flows, returns and project outcomes.

## Qualitative and quantitative

Qualitative analysis rates risks on scales such as low, medium and high, based on judgment. Quantitative analysis puts numbers on probability and impact, for example with scenario modeling. Most organizations use both, starting qualitative and adding numbers where the stakes justify it.
