Provider performance management is how healthcare organizations measure and manage the providers they contract with, against quality, cost and contract terms. ## Who counts as a provider In healthcare contracting, providers include physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners, allied health professionals such as pharmacists and therapists, dentists, and organizations such as hospitals, clinics, laboratories and home health agencies. Each is contracted to deliver care, and each contract sets expectations for quality, access, reporting and billing. ## How it works - Define measures in the contract, such as quality outcomes, access, patient experience and billing accuracy. - Collect data from claims, clinical systems and reports. - Compare results with targets and peers, and share them with the provider. - Act on gaps through improvement plans, incentives or contract changes. - Keep credentials and exclusion checks current alongside performance. ## How Aavenir handles it [Providerflow](https://aavenir.com/solutions/providerflow/) onboards providers, verifies their credentials and generates provider contracts, and Aavenir AI extracts the obligations inside them. [Obligationflow](https://aavenir.com/solutions/contract-obligation-management-software/) then tracks those obligations with owners and evidence, so performance reviews rest on what the contract actually requires. ## Common challenges - Data spread across claims, clinical and contract systems - Measures that differ between contracts, so results are hard to compare - Credentials and exclusion checks that lapse between reviews - Obligations on the payer side that nobody tracks ## Keep reading [Contract obligations Contract obligations are the duties each party agrees to perform under a contract, such as paying on time, meeting service levels, keeping insurance in force, sending reports or protecting data. It links what providers are paid to the quality and value of the care they deliver, and gives both sides facts to discuss rather than impressions. It also surfaces contract and credential problems early. [See Providerflow](https://aavenir.com/solutions/providerflow/). ### ### What measures are used to assess provider performance? Common measures cover clinical quality, access and wait times, patient experience, cost and utilization, and billing accuracy. The contract should name the measures and how they are calculated. [Read about key performance indicators](https://aavenir.com/glossary/key-performance-indicator-kpi/). ### ### How do contracts support provider performance management? The contract sets the obligations, targets and remedies. Extracting them into tracked tasks with owners and evidence makes reviews consistent and keeps the organization's own obligations in view too. Review results with providers on an agreed schedule. [Read about contract obligations](https://aavenir.com/glossary/contract-obligations/). Have a question we have not answered?
