# What is procurement planning?

Procurement planning is deciding what to buy, when, from which kind of supplier and by which method, so goods and services arrive when they are needed.

## What a procurement plan includes

- Consolidated requirements from each department

- Timelines for each purchase, working back from the date it is needed

- Sourcing method, such as a request for proposal, quotation or direct award

- Budget and expected cost

- Owners for each stage, from vendor research to approval

- Supplier selection criteria and risks to watch

## Why it matters

Planning turns buying from a series of urgent requests into a schedule. It sets realistic expectations for delivery time, cost and quality, gives sourcing teams time to run proper competition, and lets the business group similar needs into larger, better priced purchases.
