# What is lean procurement?

Lean procurement applies lean principles to buying: it removes waste from the procurement process so teams deliver more value with less time, effort and cost.

## What lean means here

Lean is a way of working that adds customer value by cutting waste. It started in manufacturing and spread to project management and software. In procurement, people use the term in several ways:

- Getting more done with less

- Running procurement with a small team

- Running procurement on a tight budget

- Removing waste from buying processes

- Applying the core lean principles to procurement

## Where the waste is

Common waste in procurement includes waiting for approvals, rekeying the same data, chasing missing documents, reworking errors and buying more than needed.
