Item master data is the record of key information about each inventory item, such as its description, dimensions, cost, suppliers and current stock level. ## What an item master contains An item master should exist for each product a company makes, buys or sells, and is usually kept in the enterprise resource planning system. It is set up when a new item is introduced and typically holds: ## Why it matters Item master data feeds purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, sales and finance. From it, supply chain teams can see who the vendors are, which components and raw materials are used, how much stock to hold and what margins should be. Errors spread quickly: a wrong unit of measure or cost shows up in every order, invoice and report that uses it. ## Keeping it clean Many companies give one person or team ownership of item records, with clear rules for creating, changing and retiring items. Duplicate items and vague descriptions are the usual problems, and both make spend reporting and invoice matching harder. ## How Aavenir handles it [Invoiceflow](https://aavenir.com/solutions/accounts-payable-automation/) checks invoice lines against purchase order lines and contract rates, and flags mismatches in quantity, unit or price that often trace back to item data problems. ## Keep reading [Supplier master data management Supplier master data management keeps one accurate, trusted record of every supplier across the systems that use it.
