# What is e-billing?

E-billing, or electronic billing, is sending, receiving and paying bills online, so customers and businesses exchange invoices and payments digitally instead of on paper.

## How e-billing works

An accounting or billing system generates the bill and sends it by email or through a web portal. Many e-bills look like paper bills and are often a PDF copy. The bill carries the usual details: amount, due date, itemized charges and payment instructions, and the payer can usually pay online from the same message or portal.
