# What is a direct purchase?

A direct purchase is buying goods or services straight from the supplier without intermediaries, often the materials and components needed for production.

## How it works

In a direct purchase, the buyer deals with the producer rather than a distributor or reseller. In production settings, direct purchases are usually frequent, in large quantities and from a pool of qualified suppliers chosen for cost, quality and reliability, like a bakery buying flour from a mill. The practice grew out of manufacturing, where these inputs decide whether the business can produce at all.
