# What is the contract request stage?

The contract request stage is the first step of the contract lifecycle, where a business user asks for a new contract and supplies the details needed to draft, review and approve it.

## What happens at the request stage

Someone in the business needs an agreement: a new supplier, a customer deal, a nondisclosure agreement or a change to an existing contract. They submit a request with the essential facts, and the request is routed to the right team. A good request usually includes:

- **Parties.**who the contract is with and who owns it internally.

- **Type and purpose.**what kind of agreement and what it covers.

- **Value and term.**expected spend or revenue and duration.

- **Key terms.**anything already agreed or required.

- **Documents.**quotes, proposals or the other party's paper.

## Why it matters

Most delays in contracting start here. Missing details mean emails back and forth, the wrong template, or a contract that has to be reworked after legal review.
