Here are four places that pays off. SM **Sonal Mehta**Feb 07, 2023 ยท 4 min read Contract lifecycle management covers two very different stretches of work. Before award, teams are evaluating bids, negotiating and choosing a supplier. After award, they are monitoring performance, handling changes, managing risk and closing out. Both depend on information that comes from outside the contract team: payment history from finance, risk findings from compliance, supplier details from onboarding. This article grew out of a 2023 Aavenir webinar on connected contract management and has been rewritten for 2026 readers. It explains why contract work depends on so many departments, and walks through four use cases where connecting contract data with other processes on a single platform, such as ServiceNow, makes the work better. Key takeaways - Pre award and post award contract management depend on data from finance, risk and supplier teams - Payment history can shape payment terms in the next contract - Risks found in contracts should inform the next request for proposal - Risk and compliance findings should reach the contract owner, and contract risks should flow back - Supplier onboarding data belongs in contract drafting, not in a separate folder ## Why do pre award and post award contract management both matter? Before award, contract management helps make sure bids are complete and comparable, that every party understands its obligations during negotiation and that the supplier chosen is the right one for the work. After award, the focus shifts to delivery. Teams monitor performance against the terms, resolve disputes, manage amendments, keep risk, budget and schedule under control, and close the contract out with proper documentation and payment. Most of a contract's value is won or lost in this stretch, which is also where data from other teams matters most. See [post signature contract value](https://aavenir.com/blog/post-signature-value/). ### The practical challenges - Holding every party to the terms and conditions - Negotiating and renegotiating as needs change - Tracking performance when data sits in separate systems - Managing amendments and keeping records accurate - Handling risk and disputes - Renewing or terminating on time - Keeping supplier and stakeholder relationships healthy - Linking contracts with budgets and other business processes ## Why does contract management depend on so many departments? A contract is a bundle of components: clauses, pricing, payment terms, service levels, conditions and schedules. Those components come from different places. Legal owns the clause language, finance shapes payment terms, procurement sets pricing and service levels, and IT or the business defines scope. Contract managers need to understand all of it to manage the agreement well. That requires coordination across departments and a shared view of policies and procedures. When each department keeps its own data in its own tool, the contract manager spends time collecting information instead of acting on it. ## What is a connected contract management experience? Connected contract management on a single data platform keeps contract information in one integrated system that other processes can read and update. On ServiceNow, that means contracts share the same data model, roles and audit history as the platform's other workflows. Teams get: - Better collaboration, because every team sees the same record - Better visibility, because status, risks and obligations are not hidden in inboxes - Simpler processes, because data is entered once - Better risk management, because findings reach the people who can act on them - Better data quality, because there is one version of each contract For the wider argument, read [connected contract management across source to pay](https://aavenir.com/connected-contract-management-bridging-the-gaps/). ## What are the main connected contract management use cases? ### 1. Contract management and accounts payable Payment history is useful negotiating evidence. If invoices from a supplier are often disputed, or if payment timing has been a recurring friction point, the next contract can set clearer payment terms, invoice requirements and dispute steps. In the other direction, accounts payable can check each invoice against the contract's rates, discounts and terms before payment. See [invoice to contract compliance](https://aavenir.com/use-cases/invoice-to-contract-compliance/). ### 2. Contract management and sourcing Risks identified in existing contracts should shape future requests for proposal. If a category keeps producing disputes over liability, data handling or change control, the next sourcing event can ask suppliers to address those points directly and score their answers. When the same supplier is invited again, its contract history informs the evaluation. Learn more about [RFPflow](https://aavenir.com/solutions/rfp-management-software/). ### 3. Contract management and governance, risk and compliance When a risk is identified, the governance, risk and compliance workflow can send a compliance checklist to the contract owner and help add mitigating provisions to the agreement. Contract managers can also send newly discovered contract risks back, so legal and compliance teams see the full picture. On ServiceNow this can connect with [ServiceNow governance, risk and compliance](https://aavenir.com/glossary/servicenow-grc/). ### 4. Contract management and supplier onboarding What you learn when onboarding a supplier, such as its experience, references, capacity, certifications and risk rating, should shape the terms and obligations you put in the contract. A supplier with limited capacity may need tighter milestones; one handling sensitive data needs stronger security and audit clauses. When onboarding and contracts share a record, drafters see that information without asking for it. See [Onboardingflow](https://aavenir.com/solutions/vendor-onboarding-software/). ## Is there a contract management system that provides this connectivity? Aavenir [Contractflow](https://aavenir.com/solutions/enterprise-contract-management-software/) is a contract lifecycle management app built natively on ServiceNow. It connects with ServiceNow workflows such as legal service delivery, vendor risk management, procurement and IT service management, and with Aavenir's own apps for supplier onboarding, invoices and obligations. For teams that do not run ServiceNow, the same apps run standalone. Aavenir AI reads contracts and proposes extractions, obligations and risk flags. A person approves every AI result before it updates the record. **Want to explore more use cases?**We will show how contract data connects with payments, sourcing, risk and onboarding on your own process. Common examples include using supplier payment history to set payment terms, feeding contract risks into the next request for proposal, linking risk findings to contract owners and using onboarding data in drafting. Each one relies on a shared contract record. See [Contractflow](https://aavenir.com/solutions/enterprise-contract-management-software/). ### ### How does ServiceNow support connected contract management? On ServiceNow, contract records share the platform's data model, roles and audit history, so they can connect with risk, procurement, legal and IT service workflows without separate integrations. Aavenir's apps are built natively on the platform. Read about [contract management on ServiceNow](https://aavenir.com/built-on-servicenow/). ### ### What is the difference between pre award and post award contract management? Pre award covers bid evaluation, negotiation and supplier selection. Post award covers performance monitoring, amendments, disputes, risk, renewals and closeout. Post award is where most value is kept or lost, and it depends heavily on data from other teams. See [contract obligation tracking](https://aavenir.com/use-cases/contract-obligation-tracking/).
