--- title: 5 Procurement and Sourcing Trends That Lasted | Aavenir url: https://aavenir.com/5-procurement-sourcing-trends-for-2022-and-beyond/ description: Five procurement and sourcing trends first named in 2022, from collaboration and self service to AI, mobile and cloud, and what each one looks like in 2026. updated: 2026-11-07 --- [Home](https://aavenir.com/) / [Blog](https://aavenir.com/blogs/) / Procurement and sourcing trends Procurement strategy # 5 procurement and sourcing trends, revisited for 2026 We named five trends at the start of 2022. All five held. Here is what each one looks like now, and what to do about it. MP **Misri Parikh**Jan 11, 2022 ยท 4 min read When we first published this list in January 2022, procurement had just been through the hardest stretch in its modern history. Teams were sourcing everything from masks and gloves to fuel and microprocessors under extreme pressure, and the profession earned a new place at the leadership table. We named five trends that we expected to shape procurement and sourcing in the years after. Looking back from 2026, all five held, but several changed shape. This revised version keeps the original five, explains what each looks like today and suggests what to do next. Key takeaways - Collaboration tools moved from nice to have to the core of the buying experience - Supplier and employee self service became the default way to start procurement work - AI shifted from spend analytics to reading contracts and bids, with people deciding - Mobile approvals are now expected, not a feature - Cloud is standard, and the new question is which platform your tools run on ## Trend 1: communication and collaboration tools What we said in 2022:better internal collaboration would raise productivity and cut cost, and better external communication would strengthen supplier relationships and reduce supply risk. What it looks like in 2026:collaboration is now the buying experience itself. Employees expect to raise a request in one place and see its status, the way they track a parcel. Sourcing events gather input from procurement, IT, security, legal and finance in a shared workspace rather than through email attachments. Supplier questions are answered once and shared with every bidder. What to do:move intake, sourcing and contract requests into one workflow that every stakeholder can see. See how [publishing and collaborating on sourcing events](https://aavenir.com/solutions/publish-rfx-collaborate/) works in RFPflow. ## Trend 2: self service portals What we said in 2022:self service would improve the experience for everyone and speed up processes by removing dependence on other people, from onboarding to everyday supplier interaction. What it looks like in 2026:self service is the default for routine work. Suppliers register, upload documents, update bank details and check invoice and payment status without calling anyone. Business users draft standard agreements from approved templates. The procurement team focuses on exceptions and strategic categories. What to do:start with supplier onboarding and invoice status, the two areas that generate the most calls and emails. See [Onboardingflow](https://aavenir.com/solutions/vendor-onboarding-software/) and [how vendor portals strengthen collaboration](https://aavenir.com/how-do-vendor-portals-help-strengthen-vendor-collaboration/). ## Trend 3: AI and data analytics What we said in 2022:AI would automate time consuming tasks and turn large, complex data sets into insight, especially into total spend, which procurement had long struggled to see. What it looks like in 2026:this trend changed the most. Spend analytics is still valuable, but the bigger shift is AI that reads documents: supplier bids, contracts, invoices and compliance certificates. AI now drafts bid scores against weighted criteria, compares supplier paper with your playbook, extracts obligations after signature and checks invoices against contract prices. The question buyers now ask is not whether a tool uses AI, but who decides. In Aavenir, [Avy](https://aavenir.com/platform/avy-ai-assistant/) does the reading and a named person approves every result, with both logged for audit. **What to do:**pick one high volume, rule based task, such as first pass bid scoring or obligation extraction, and measure it against your own baseline before expanding. ## Trend 4: mobile technology What we said in 2022:mobile devices had become essential business tools for procurement specialists who spend much of their time away from their desks. What it looks like in 2026:mobile is simply expected. Approvers sign off purchase requests, contract approvals and invoice exceptions from their phones, and the main benefit is speed: fewer items waiting days for someone to return to a laptop. The bar now is that the mobile experience carries the full context, the contract, the clause or the invoice line, so an approver can decide with confidence. What to do:check which approval steps still need a desktop, and fix those first. Long approval waits are often the largest single delay in cycle time. ## Trend 5: cloud and software as a service What we said in 2022:cloud and subscription software would let companies use the latest procurement automation without the upfront cost and staff overhead of on premise systems. What it looks like in 2026:cloud is standard. The new question is consolidation. Many procurement teams now run a separate cloud tool for each step, with integrations between them, and data is scattered again. The trend has moved toward running procurement apps on a platform the company already governs, so roles, audit history and records are shared. What to do:count the separate tools between a purchase request and a paid invoice. If your company already runs ServiceNow, consider apps that run natively there. The first is contract intelligence after signature: teams realized that much of the value negotiated in sourcing is lost when obligations, service credits and price caps are not tracked. The second is regulation reaching into supplier contracts, from digital operational resilience rules in financial services to supply chain due diligence laws in Europe. | 2022 trend | 2026 reality | Next step | | Collaboration tools | One shared workflow for every request | Unify intake, sourcing and contracts | | --- | --- | --- | | Self service | Default for routine supplier and user tasks | Start with onboarding and invoice status | | AI and analytics | AI reads bids and contracts, people decide | Pilot one rule based task | | Mobile | Expected for every approval | Remove desktop only steps | | Cloud | Standard, now consolidating | Reduce the number of tools | Both point the same way: contracts are becoming the source of truth that sourcing, onboarding and payment all depend on. See [what source to contract means](https://aavenir.com/blog/what-is-source-to-contract/). ## The bottom line Collaboration, self service, AI, mobile and cloud all shaped procurement as expected. In 2026 the work is joining them up: one workflow from request to payment, AI that reads while people decide, and fewer tools on a platform you already govern. ### In this article - Trend 1: communication and collaboration tools - Trend 2: self service portals - Trend 3: AI and data analytics - Trend 4: mobile technology - Trend 5: cloud and software as a service - What did we miss in 2022? **See the whole flow from request to payment**Sourcing, contracts, onboarding and invoices, with Aavenir AI reading and your team deciding. AI that reads bids, contracts and invoices with people approving results, supplier and employee self service, mobile approvals, consolidation of cloud tools onto one platform and closer tracking of contract value after signature. See [procurement contract management](https://aavenir.com/solutions/procurement-contract-management/). ### ### How is AI used in procurement and sourcing today? It drafts bid scores against weighted criteria, compares supplier contracts with your playbook, extracts obligations after signature and checks invoices against contract terms. The decisions stay with people. In Aavenir, a named person approves every AI result. Learn about [Avy](https://aavenir.com/platform/avy-ai-assistant/). ### ### Why are procurement teams consolidating their tools? Running a separate cloud tool for each step scatters data and adds integrations to maintain. Running procurement apps on one governed platform shares roles, audit history and records from request to payment. Read about [Aavenir on ServiceNow](https://aavenir.com/built-on-servicenow/).
